Adebayor gets extra one-match ban

Adebayor gets extra one-match ban
Arsenal's Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor was given an extra one-match ban on Friday after his red card in the brawl which marred the League Cup final defeat by Chelsea.

Adebayor, who was also fined £7,500 by an FA disciplinary commission hearing, was found guilty of a charge of reacting aggressively and failing to leave the field of play immediately after being dismissed.

He had denied the charge and his view had been strongly backed by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who said a linesman had lied in his match report by saying the Togolese forward had punched Chelsea's Frank Lampard.

Wenger was subsequently asked by the FA to explain those remarks and the English game's ruling body said on Friday they had received an answer from the Frenchman.

“Wenger's response will now be considered and no further comment can be made at this time,” the FA said on their website.

In giving a one-match ban, the FA said they “had taken into account Adebayor's playing record and the mitigation offered”.

Adebayor's red card came amid a fracas in which Ivorian team-mate Kolo Toure, Arsenal captain on the day, and Chelsea's Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel were also dismissed.

Arsenal's other Ivorian defender, Emmanuel Eboue, was later given a three-match ban for violent conduct, having struck Chelsea defender Wayne Bridge during the melee.

Arsenal and Chelsea have admitted a charge of failing to control their players and/or officials at the final.

Both clubs have requested personal hearings which will be scheduled in due course, the FA said. – Reuters

Arsenal 1 : 1 PSV (agg 1 - 2)

Arsenal 1 : 1 PSV (agg 1 - 2)
PSV Eindhoven defender Alex threw Arsenal a Champions League lifeline with an own goal - then sent them crashing out with a superb late header.

Arsenal needed to score twice to reach the last eight, and looked on course when Alex diverted Denilson's corner into his own net after 58 minutes.

Arsene Wenger's side then paid the ultimate price for missing chances.

Alex, on loan from Chelsea, headed in Edison Mendez's free-kick with eight minutes left for the vital away goal.

It meant Arsenal's season had gone into meltdown in the space of 10 days, after losing the Carling Cup final to Chelsea and being dumped out of the FA Cup at Blackburn.

Adebayor missed 3 very good chances leaving Arsenal fans very frustrated with the Togolese international.

Adebayor Wants New Deal

Adebayor Wants New Deal
Emmanuel Adebayor wants to discuss a new contract at Arsenal after claiming he is aware of interest from Manchester United.

The Togo striker joined The Gunners from Monaco just over 12 months ago, but is keen to be rewarded with improved terms.

He has been linked with Premiership rivals United, while Spanish side Valencia are also reported to be on his trail.

But while the 23-year-old is flattered by the interest from other clubs, he concedes he would be willing to sign a new deal at Emirates Stadium.

"My agent has told me both Manchester United and Valencia are following me," Adebayor is quoted in the News of the World.

"But I am not getting carried away with that, even if they're two massive clubs.

"I am doing well at Arsenal, but they have to show me they want to construct something with regard to my new status in the team.

"I would love to extend my contract. I am in the heart of the supporters."

Adebayor, who is currently serving a domestic suspension after his red card in the Carling Cup final, has scored six goals in 21 Premiership appearances this season.

Chelsea 2 : 1 Arsenal

Chelsea 2 : 1 Arsenal
Didier Drogba grabbed both goals as Chelsea came from behind to win a Carling Cup final that ended in ugly scenes at the Millennium Stadium.

Theo Walcott gave Arsenal the lead after ghosting past Ricardo Carvalho.

But Chelsea equalised when Drogba was given the benefit of the linesman's flag to slot home and with six minutes to go he headed in a powerful winner.

A brawl erupted between the sides late on that led to dismissals for Mikel Jon Obi, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor.
